25 мая 2015 года в Балтийске прошла торжественная церемония переименования номерного малого противолодочного корабля Балтийской военно-морской базы в МПК «Кабардино-Балкария».
В митинге приняли участие губернатор Калининградской области Николай Цуканов, глава Кабардино-Балкарской республики Юрий Коков, командующий Балтийским флотом вице-адмирал Виктор Кравчук и инициатор события — учредитель ООО «ВоенТекстильПром» Аталиков Аслан Анатольевич.
Присвоение именного названия кораблям — сложившаяся на Балтийском флоте традиция. Республика возьмет шефство над МПК, на его борту будут проходить срочную службу призывники из Кабардино-Балкарии.Команду для подшефного корабля станут формировать из матросов, призванных из этой республики.
31 мая 2016 года на сессии Совета местного самоуправления городского округа Нальчик было принято решение переименовать 2-й Промышленный проезд на окраине города в улицу Калининградскую.По словам и.о. министра строительства региона Амира Кушхова, такое решение было «символическим подарком» к 70-летию образования Калиниградской области.
6 июля 2016 года был внесен еще один вклад в укрепление двусторонних связей между регионами — присвоение имени столицы Кабардино-Балкарии одной из улиц Калининграда. Новая улица разместилась между Флотской и Рихарда Зорге, от улицы Аксакова до пересечения с улицей В. Денисова
Корабль заложен на судостроительной верфи Peene-Werft в Вольгасте (ГДР) 2 сентября 1987 года, спущен на воду 16 августа 1988 года, вошел в состав флота 31 октября 1989 года.
За период своей службы корабль побывал с визитами в портах Германии, Польши и Латвии. Неоднократно выполнял задачи боевой службы в Балтийском и Северном морях. Принимал участия в «Запад-2009» и «Запад-2013». Корабль 5 раз в составе корабельной поисковой ударной группы завоевывал кубок главнокомандующего ВМФ России по противолодочной подготовке.
МПК успешно выполнил более 100 артиллерийских, 80 торпедных и бомбовых стрельб. В 2007 и 2011 годах был признан лучшим кораблем соединения кораблей охраны водного района Балтийской ВМБ.
По итогам 2013 года «МПК-227» признан лучшим кораблем по штурманской подготовке в ВМФ РФ. В настоящее время корабль находится в составе сил постоянной готовности Балтийского флота, успешно выполняет поставленные задачи боевой подготовки, боевого дежурства, продолжая достойно нести службу по охране западных рубежей Российской Федерации.
МПК «Кабардино-Балкария» имеет на своем вооружении пусковые установки зенитно-ракетного комплекса, зенитные управляемые ракеты, 76-мм артиллерийскую установку,
шестиствольную 30-мм артиллерийскую установку, торпедные аппараты, реактивные бомбометные установки, а также реактивные глубинные бомбы.
